Theuerkauf In London #4

Part Four of a photo blog of the travels of #13 Brian Theuerkauf.

March easily became my month of travels, the first week was my spring break and I took full advantage of this opportunity. I booked a flight to Munich, then booked another flight from Prague to London, and told myself that I will figure out the rest in between. I packed up my bag and headed off to Germany.

Upon arrival I was incredibly excited to be able to speak German, which I speak pretty well. The first thing I did was head out to the Allianz arena, where my favorite club, Bayern Munich plays. I took the tour and it lived up to every high expectation I had of it. After that I headed to the famous "Marienplatz" which was the center of the city and had many beer halls. I had to complete my German pilgrimage to the Hofbrauhaus, where they served beers and pretzels in absurd sizes. After two days of exploring Munich, I took a bus to Vienna.

I originally was dreading the 5 hour bus ride to Vienna, until I realized I was driving past the Alps. It was one of the most beautiful sights I have ever seen. When I arrived in Vienna, my friend Tobias, who is a Austrian native picked me up. The hospitality I received from him and his family was second to none. Moreover, it was nice living with a local who knew all the good spots in the city and all of the hidden gems. My personal favorite was going to the top of the "Schonbrunn palace" where you can overlook the entire city.

One afternoon in Vienna, we decided to take a day trip to Bratislava, Slovakia. I never realized how close they were geographically. It is about the distance from Fredonia to Buffalo. However it was 180 degrees different. I never have been to Russia, but it felt as though I was. It had a real eastern block feeling. I can't say it was my favorite place but was culturally extremely cool to see something like it.

After Bratislava, we took another bus to Prague. I always had high expectations for it, but even my highest expectations for a city would have been surpassed by Prague. In my opinion it is the most beautiful cities in the world. Its architecture was Gothic and incredibly interesting. Most of their city was 3x older than the USA. The reason it is so old and feels medieval is that it was relatively untouched during the two world wars. During my two days there I walked close to 20+ miles because I wanted to soak everything in. Pictures don't even do justice to how awesome this city is. After this long week on the road I headed back to London and returned to classes.

The next week my family came and we went to Belgium (3 hours after the bombing..) I have a lot to say about that and have already wrote a ton so I will save it for my next post.

Another weekend - another European City - Milan.

Not having classes on Friday truly makes traveling a breeze. On
Thursday I ventured off to Milan, Italy. Upon arrival I was hoping for
warm, sunny weather that you would stereotype with the nation, however
the result was quite the opposite.

The first thing we decided the do once we were settled was to find the
famous church Duomo. When exiting the underground metro, I walked out
and right in front of me is this massive church (5th largest in the
world) with 135 detailed spires. It truly was breathtaking to see in
person. We took the never ending staircase to the top.

From up on top of Duomo we had some incredible views.  After climbing back to the bottom, we found a small gelato shop out in front of Duomo.

I had tickets to the AC Milan vs. Torino match at the San
Siro Stadium (Venue for this years champions league final). The
stadium itself was incredible.  It was wicked old but also holds over
81,000 people. The game ended 1-0 for Milan, thankfully all of the
seats are covered otherwise I would've been soaked as it poured all 90
minutes.

I did some more exploring around Milan due to the weather
restricting me from visiting Lake Comeau.  Instead I found some
cool soccer shops which naturally peaked my interest.

Overall Milan was an amazing city and highly recommend it. If you ever
go, you have to stop at Luini's and eat a Panzerotti!

Theuerkauf In London #2

Hello again,

In the past two weekends I decided to do some traveling outside of the
U.K. and explore Europe. On February 5-7 I went to Copenhagen,
Denmark. My first impression was that the city had a very old vibe to
it, rich in culture. Despite that the sky's were gray and it was cold,
the city and suburbs were beautiful. My favorite place I discovered
was the Nyhavn canal (picture with me and my two friends). The
different colored shops and pubs along canal was beautiful. I then
found a street that had a trampoline sidewalk. I probably had more fun
on it than a 20 year old man should.

Following my trip to Copenhagen I had to spend the majority of my week
getting school work done and playing 5 a side soccer. During the week
I went to tower bridge and walked across the glass floor which was
incredible.

On Friday February 12th I set out to Amsterdam, Holland to do some
exploring. This past summer I met a guy around my age in the Dominican
Republic on vacation. He told me if I ever come to Amsterdam to hit
him up, naturally I did. It was amazing having a local show you around
so you don't get ripped off at tourist attractions, and find unique
cool things that all the natives did. Him and his roommates were
superb hosts and really showed us a great time. On a side note, the
red light district was easily the most insane place I have ever walked
through. It made Las Vegas seem like the Vatican, however I won't go
into specifics about what you see there.

Both Copenhagen and Amsterdam were amazing cities and highly recommend
them to anyone. What shocked me most about both was the amount of
cyclists and bike highways. More people were driving bikes than cars,
which really was evident as I don't believe I saw one overweight
person in either place.

Theuerkauf in London

This is first of a series of posts on Brian Theuerkauf, a junior midfielder from Lancaster, NY,  who is studying abroad in London this semester.

"As for an update on me, I just finished week two of classes and so far so good far all."

"There is a 5v5 pitch right outside my dorm where I play almost daily.  There are four soccer players from Webster University (DIII school in St. Louis) who play with me and a ton of foreigners."

"I attended a Watford United game last weekend and it was awesome.  I sat two rows up next to the corner flag."

"Also one morning on my way back from the gym (roughly a mile from campus) I passed by a hotel where Sunderland FC began boarding their bus. I saw USA soccer star Deandre Yedlin and got a photo with him."

"I have several trips planned for the upcoming weekends including Manchester, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Dortmund and Belgium.  I will be sure to share pictures with you."

Fredonia to Brooklyn, Q & A with Max Prosser

In the fall of 2015 Maximillian Prosser was entering his final season as a midfielder on the Fredonia Men's Soccer Team.  Now, just three months after his final game versus Hobart on October 27th, Max finds himself living in Brooklyn, NY and working at marketing firm called Brightedge as an Enterprise Business Representative.  Here is what he had to say about the move.

CPJG: Less than three months ago you were playing college soccer and finishing up your degree in Fredonia and now you have moved to Brooklyn and secured your first job.  How does that feel?

MP: It feels great.  I had an awesome time playing the sport I love with a great group of guys but I also felt it was time to move on to the next big step in my life.  It was really gratifying to see the hard work I put in in school and my search for the right career pay off.

CPJG: You got the second highest GPA on our team this semester.  Did that help?

MP: I am sure it didn't hurt but I think my experience with internships was a big factor.

CPJG: How did your education prepare you for the work you are doing?

MP: My major of marketing prepared me very well.

CPJG: How did you being a student-athlete prepare, help obtain and allow you to be successful in your field?

MP: It taught me how to manage my time by being able play, take classes and find a job while keeping a social life.  Sales is driven by competitiveness and drive that's something that sports has taught me throughout my years.

CPJG: Good luck to you Max!
